SAPPHO

40 x 30"

Sappho was an archaic Greek poet whom Plato called "the tenth muse." During her time she was a well-known teacher and lyrical poet. Her intelligence frightened many men so they dubbed her promiscuous and sexually deviant. In 1073, Pope Gregory burned all her surviving works because of her "licentiousness."
